What Is the 4% Rule?

Criticism and Limitations

Based on Historical US Markets
Bengen and Trinity analyzed US market returns during the "American Century" — a period of exceptional US economic growth. Other countries' markets have shown lower returns. Future US returns may not match historical patterns.
30-Year Assumption
The research targeted traditional retirement (age 65, life expectancy ~95). Early retirees planning 40-50+ year retirements face longer exposure to sequence risk and uncertainty. Many FIRE practitioners use 3.25-3.5% rates for added safety.
Current Low-Yield Environment
When Bengen conducted his research, bond yields were 6-8%. Today's yields are historically low. Some researchers suggest 3-3.5% may be more appropriate given current starting conditions.
No Flexibility Assumed
The rule assumes rigid withdrawals regardless of market conditions. In reality, most retirees can:
- Reduce discretionary spending temporarily in down markets
- Work part-time if needed
- Delay Social Security for higher future income
- Adjust lifestyle to market conditions
This flexibility often makes 4% withdrawals more sustainable than rigid modeling suggests.
Ignores Taxes and Fees
The 4% rule calculates gross withdrawals. In practice, you need to account for:
